{And aren't Nikki's WOYWW4 cool?}
And look whose ATC just arrived from the UK - dear, kind Annie!!
Posted 22.5.13 and arrived 29.5.13, how amazing is that? God is good, so is kind Annie, thank you dear friend! how bright and cheery it is! with a lovely card and poem too. As still dont have proper glasses (end of week, God willing) have not made my other ATC's yet but in process on my desk. Did finish my catalogue of all stamps {YAY!} but will show next week as have something else to show you (plus I hope to make a cover).
Well, here on my desk is another surprise... perhaps..
WARNING: there is long detail here! You may want to scroll down below if it's not your thing.
Had been thinking for ages to share this with you all, as I have a recipe to make a gelli plate and know they are not available everywhere.
I was reading Lindsay's (Frugal Crafter) post the other day and then saw it on Annette in Oz's blog too so thought had better do it at last - so here 'tis.

I was reading Lindsay's (Frugal Crafter) post the other day and then saw it on Annette in Oz's blog too so thought had better do it at last - so here 'tis.
The recipe is from some decades ago now, when I started infant school teaching. Although there were photocopiers around for over a decade then, they were not cheap here. We did
not have such fancy copying methods for teaching. This was used with a
special printing carbon for copying from jelly pad (as we called it) into books. The
carbon would just sink into the pad then you would re-use it for another worksheet the next day. I used the same method for teaching Sunday school, I kept it in the
cupboard for many, many years, in warm and cold weather.
It never goes off ( both sugar and glycerine are preservatives).
Then stencil carbon not around, they stopped making the metho spirit duplicator stencils. I can still smell the methylated spirits we used with them...that does take me back!

Recipe for Gelli Plate
or Jelly pad ( as we called them, used them in slice tray.
It sets without refrigeration, and kept without refrigeration too):
(Imperial measures used in original, blue is metric, *red is what I used, made *3/5 size)
This gelli plate on the video really is very like this one, except mine is yellowish from the colour of brand of my gelatine and not so big, (I made it 3/5 of original recipe) and not so neat edged. That is only because of my mould.
Ideally a plastic container would be better for removal, as well as finish on edges.
I found out from videos that first lot of work was all wrong, as had not used the paint correctly. I had it way too thick, and did not put in patterns properly..
Don't use sharp objects as put a tiny hole in mine.
I could easily re-melt if need be though. I would just trim off the coloured stains as they are few, and then reheat in microwave and reset. It however did not seem to affect it at all.
** Query below on bubbles (in comments):
No, if you are careful and not vigorous you end up with very few if any bubbles. It is not really like jam, and small bubbles (if any) are easy enough to pop them before allowing to set.
If you would like to try another recipe, Lindsay also has another one here on this post.
I made this one as knew it worked in our climate here in Oz, and I had ingredients except for glycerine.
I bought only 2 x100ml bottles as they were $5.95 each; and did not want a large plate anyway. I am a card maker, not into journals or scrapping.
Here is the Oz shot for the week....
It is of "Marnie's" yellow Hibiscus, flowering beautifully large blooms. Yes, it is sunny here - we are blessed the odd shower, enough to water is lovely as winter approaches. The ground cover is called Golden Sedum, has magnificent yellow flowers in spring, complements the hibiscus.
or Jelly pad ( as we called them, used them in slice tray.
It sets without refrigeration, and kept without refrigeration too):
(Imperial measures used in original, blue is metric, *red is what I used, made *3/5 size)
*Glycerine ~ 12 ounces - 354.9 ml *200ml
Gelatine ~ 2 ounces - 56.7 gm *35gm
White Sugar~ 3 ounces - 85 gm *51gm
Water ~ 7 1/2 ounces -213 ml *120ml
I am not very expert at using Gelli Plates. In fact really I hadn't much idea, so looked up better guides. I really dont have right paint as need craft or poster paint I think. To see better pieces than my efforts ~ here is a video here or here.
Method: Dissolve half water with gelatine, dissolve half water with sugar. Combine and add glycerine. Stir over heat until dissolved. Set in a 12" x 7" tray.
(or square size 16cm x 16cm)
{EDIT: *in answer to comments, **glycerine** helps preserve it, as said lasted for years and NOT in fridge. Also Sugar and salt were used for years before fridges, as preservatives - see Google search link here }
If using this recipe and/ or jelly pad on you blog please kindly link over to this post..thank you.

ReplyDeleteYour space is looking good this week Shaz. I don’t know where I’ve been hiding out but intrigued by the Jelly Plate. I’ve not seen one before and don’t know what it is or how you’re supposed to use it, so will need to investigate me thinks.
Enjoy your Wednesday snooping on this very special Day

Glorious desk as always Shaz- love the Hibiscus too. What a beautiful colour. Must try the Gelli plate- didn't want to buy one, now I can have a go. Have a great week, Hugs Shaz xx
ReplyDeleteWOW Shaz!
ReplyDeleteGlad you came to visit!
I haven't linked to the brayer tutorial yet, but I will.
Read (with interest) your posts back a while.
Glad your eye surgery was a success!
I'm at work though, so had to quit!
Your cards, pictures & techniques are all wonderful!
Interesting post about the gelli plate. I tried the one without glycerin and it molded within a day so melted it down and tried again but even in the refrig it didn't last long. Does the glycerin preserve it better so it doesn't mold or is it just my luck and the climate here in OK? Love the hibiscus. Happy WOYWW 4th Anniversary. Have a great week. Vickie #14
ReplyDeleteI have one of Annie's ATCs as well! Did you want to swap with me? I love the idea of making your own gelli plate - very clever indeed. Thanks for sharing. Have a very happy 4th WOYWW birthday. God Bless, Caro x (#67)

Hello Shaz, happy 4th anniversary to you :) Brilliant post - where else would you find a recipe for making a gelli plate than on WOYWW. This is one I'll copy over and keep for future use. Also checked out your previous post and I'm so impressed with how you made 3 cards from one and they are beautiful. Here's to your new glasses arriving soon. Hope you've had a lovely WOYWW, Elizabeth x #155
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic ATC from Annie, oh my!! You are a lucky girl, Shaz! Thanks for the gelly instructions, altho I'm more of a plain bread kind of girl. Sorry, corny sense of humor lurking here!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for coming by the Playhouse already! Happy WOYWW Anniversary and have a great week! I hope your glasses arrive by then! Darnell #34
Annie got around the globe when it came to ATCs. Love the one she sent you.
ReplyDeleteI have never included glycerine in my gelli plates. Just gelatin and water. I hope you have good luck with yours.
Happy WOYWW4 from # 17.
Now that is cool..making your own gelli plate! Not available maybe a good thing as they are expensive. Good luck with the glasses. I'm on my 2nd try to getting the prescription right. Darned ol cataracts. Thanks for the earlier visit. Happy WOYWW4! Nan G #6
ReplyDeleteAs always, enjoyed your pics of the flowers around you. You're heading to winter, we're heading to summer. Loved your desk sign WOYWW. Your ATCs were so pretty too. And thanks for the gelli recipe. I've seen that somewhere else too...but still don't have a good idea of what these do-- exactly. I see some awesome work done with them though. I'm trying to learn with the Dylusions sprays, gotta sort out the pan pastels...maybe GELLI after that!!! Had my eye consult today. Dr. booked til 7-31, but hopefully they'll work me in sooner. As God wills. Hope your specs arrive soon. TFS & Many hugs
ReplyDeleteAlways a pleasure to visit your desk, and find a ray of sunshine in the not so desky photos. gelli plate making is in the back of my list-way way back lol. Hey guess who I'm sending my ATC to...YOU! Send me your snail mail bridget.larsen@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW 4 Shaz-
ReplyDeleteHope this finds you knee deep in those lovely yellow hibiscus flowers...I always appreciate your photographs. I forget how much I miss the sun, and flowers, and trees until I actually see them - or they finally show up here. Feast or famine; 10 days ago 4 inches of snow, today it was 80 degrees. Very unusual for us. Thanks for the recipe. One of these days, I'm going to give it a go. Happy days to you.

ReplyDeleteYour gelli plate looks great! Trust a crafter to be inventive!
ReplyDeleteLove the hibiscus. I have that same sedum on my front garden bed too!
Hi Shaz,
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and your lovely words :D But when I pop over to your place I saw this great recipe. Maybe I gonna give it a try, because working with this plate looks great to me too. xFranka
Hello - glad you are getting those specs soon....you know, for the life of me I don't know what you are on about in this gelli plate thing....where have I been all my life of crafting I ask you...even read every comment to see if there was any light at the end of the tunnel - the only thing I found was that I am not alone in not being aware of it's capabilities, thankfully (meaning that I am not alone of course).
ReplyDeleteNow when you get those specs we want another tut telling/showing us what it does...no pressure like!!! All the best.
Hi Shaz! Sorry to be so late visiting, I am trying to meet as many WOYWWers as I can. Everyone is so talented. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Have a great rest of your week! Rasz #164
ReplyDeleteif anything goes wron with my pad I will try your recipe! I will add it to the resources on my post to when I get a moment!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for that recipe Shaz, I plan to get the ingredients to try it when I go to town.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this recipe! Does your mixture contain a lot of bubbles after pouring it off into your container to set?
ReplyDeleteCharlie Brown
DeleteJust scrap off the bubbles with a piece of cardstock
as in this video
http://youtu.be/JZgBkBv8y5s
I just made this and cannot wait for mine to set. Adjusted the quantities a little but it has worked well. I didn't add the sugar either as I can't really see the point of using it. Thanks for sharing your recipe and will let you know how mine goes! :o)
ReplyDeletehttps://www.google.com.au/#q=sugar+as+preservative
Deletesugar is a preservative, along with glycerine...
Hi. I would love to make four or five plates to use with my young art students. What is the purpose of the sugar? It doesn't seem it would be necessary.... Wondering. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Ggirl - not sure if you will get this but trying anyway..
DeleteSugar is a preservative along withe Glycerine.
see Google search here:
https://www.google.com.au/#q=sugar+as+preservative
Have edited post now so you can see this and will be fine for your art class .. as long as you dont use sharp things when using it like I said in post. Shaz in Oz.x
I didn't use sugar in mine and it doesn't seem to have made a difference at all. Still going strong!
ReplyDeleteI have just made the gelli plate, very pleased! How do I store it please. Its on a glass cutting plate, but do I cover it? What works best also, thanks. Marita
ReplyDeleteI just made my own gelli plate from the shazinoz site, very pleased. It sits on a glass plate but I havent been able to find what I should cover it with, to keep dust off etc. Any info please. Thanks Marita
ReplyDeleteHi Rita- I actually store mine in an airtight container that I bought on sale at woolies. But originally when made it for school in seventies, I just left it in a slice tin which made it in and put plastic cover over it (like bag) lightly.. in a cupboard which does not get overly disturbed, it really up to you. hope that helps, Shaz in Oz.x
DeleteThank you for the instructions. I have one question - do you have to set this in refrigeration initially? I see that on other like recipes. Thank you again
ReplyDeleteHullo there Valerie,
DeleteNo! it requires no refrigeration at all just keep in a cupboard is fine, say that in reply above and in original post...
I say above recipe we kept it in cupboard in warm and cool weather.
I will highlight now in an edit though, thank you,
Shaz in Oz.x
wow what a clever idea, and it looks so easy to make too. I'd heard you could make a gelli plate from gelatin but I thought it would only last a few days so this is brilliant. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteClaire xx
This is supercool - I think I'll try this out soon. How long does it last and are there problems with shrinkage?
ReplyDeleteHi Corneia sorry just found this ancient question on the gelly plate.. The post does say it lasts for years ... Kept in cool dark pace is blest lie a cupboard or drawer, thanks Shaz,x
DeleteI made mine back in August and keep it in the garage. It's been from one extreme to the other with the temp. I checked it just the other day and no mold. Time to pull it out and play some more. Thanks again for the great recipe!
ReplyDeleteSo glad that i found your blog as i love all of this kind of work. I came here through the "frugalcrafter" and the gelli plate recipe. I liked it all so much i decided to stay. Thanks again for sharing all of your wonderful ideas. Definitely going to try the gelli plate recipe.
ReplyDeleteWell somehow blogger delted this comment below between when clicked to publish and came across to answer it - dont know how, but here it is from my emails:
ReplyDeleteCris G has left a new comment on your post "How to make a Gelli Plate or Jelly pad? + WOYWW4":
Thanks for the tutorial, just what I was looking for :). Your instructions are clear and easy to follow, but I must have done something wrong, because my plate is too sticky... I have a hard time cleaning because paints adhere to the plate. I made it using yellow sugar... do you think I could melt it and add more water and/or glycerine? Any suggestions, please? Thank you.
Posted by Cris G to Calligraphy Cards - Shaz in Oz at March 21, 2014 at 12:11 PM
Answer to Cris:
No idea what yellow sugar is but my guess that is the problem. Glycerine is sticky as well as sugar if not mixed in right quantities.
To be honest I doubt if reheating and adding extra items would fix it but no harm in trying .. I suppose
But think if it was me, I would use white sugar as per recipe and try again. It should wash off acrylic paint with soap and water.
Some paints are not meant to be used on gelli plates so read up as to which paints should be used as this maybe the problem too.
Shaz in Oz.x
PS This week there was really good tutorial on using the plate over here:
http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/gelprintingbasics/
Hello, Shaz. Yellow sugar is a bit sweeter than white sugar, it may have helped to the adherence of my gelli plate. However, for the first tries I used regular acrylic paint, the one usually used on canvas, but then I tried with Distress paint, much more liquid, and the problem was solved... also helped the fact that I cleaned the plate a few times, I suppose. Thanks for your help.
ReplyDeleteHi Cris, I am so glad to hear that.. and I think using yellow sugar was the problem.
ReplyDeleteI have heard and read using the paint is also important so combining the two is good.
The Splitcoaster video in my last comment to you says this and is very good starting spot .. she is skilful which I am not :D

Hi Shaz - My sister (whose name is also Shaz & lives near Coffs Harbour) and I made your Gelli Plate recipe on the weekend with great results. It was a bit sticky at first but we left it for a while and stickiness disappeared. Fantastic results. Just wanted to advise you that I posted a link to your website on Artist Journal Workshop FB site as I know many people will be interested to make a Gelli plate for their art journalling & yours is a tried & tested recipe. Thank you so much for providing the recipe, Virginia in Sydney
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for the recipe. I did it today and seems fantastic. I need a free afternoon to really try it. I translated your recipe in Slovene language and linked it to your blog. Hugs, Maja
ReplyDeleteHello Shaz, I have some sheets of leaf gelatine to use,is this the right stuff? If so, how mnay sheeets would I need for your recipe. It says on the Noel's box, 150 leaves weight approx 500g. Gordon Bennett!!! Anyone good at maths out there??? Katie
ReplyDeleteTry your recipe eqivalents on box Angel wings... no idea if leaf is same as ONLY use powdered.
ReplyDeleteIf not recipe equivalent on box, then ring their manufacturing help line on box.... you bought their product so deserve service.
Ratios matter in recipes so stick to the right tried true ratio... powdered gelatine is lot cheaper so if to be safe get it. Hope that helps Shaz in Oz.x
hi shaz im new to this website and love it .i live in india and i followed your instructions but my gelli plate did not solidyfy even after 2 hrs please reply fast and how much time goes it take to solidyfy and also should i refridgerate it
ReplyDeletedear shaz now its been two day my gelli plate hasnt hardened i posted a comment yesterday but no reply im a bit troubled as things r very expensive in india pls reply fast
ReplyDeleteHi there Mihka,
DeleteI am very sorry I have no idea why you recipe has not set like a jelly. I am sorry for the delay in reply, I hadn't been online, very busy.
You could try re-melting it and adding more gelatine to it. I have never had one not set with this recipe, but you just follow the right quantities.
I pray it sets for you with re-melting it and adding more gelatine...
That's all I can suggest.
I rather suspect different countries might have differing types of gelatine, as someone inUkraine had issues too. However she said she solved it...so,trust you will too.
God bless, Shaz in Oz.x
Thank you very much for sharing. It worked perfectly!!! wowwww I am so happy!!!
ReplyDeletehi shaz..
ReplyDeleteI am a self learner crafter and a Jewellery designer from India.I am very much inspired by your process of making jelly plate.
Rite nw m obsessed in making a jelly plate of my own.
In India v get gelatine in grams, not sold in packets so was confused how to go about it.Cud u plz help me in the ingredients required.
i am making 10"×8" plate so how much grams of gelatine to b used with the proportion of glycerine, water and alcohol (in ml).
hope to hear from u soon.m so excited..
Thanx
Suravi Kumar
Hi Suravi.
ReplyDeleteMy post doesn't use packet gelatine but gelatine by weight in both grams and ounces. I don't understand why you think it's in packets, unless it's comment by someone else has confused you.
Use the orignal recipe to work out quantities - if you change then you'll need to keep the ratio the same other wise it won't work.
I had to work out my own ratios and so will you, I'm sorry I can't help any more than that.
I'd rather not take responsibility for maths for your sized container. I've shared the original fifty year old recipe and it works.
My jelly plate made four years ago now is as good as day it was made except for dew dents I added!! By accident.
