What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 87

Well another week has flown by! and a whole month to boot, as we enter February gone is January and all the things I was supposed to do in the holidays (we just finished summer hols here)...well, some of craft things were done, reading, a few other minor items but not the sewing, mending etc. etc!

More prayer needed as far north Qld is about to be hit again!... this time a category 5 cyclone Yasi (that is as bad as they get, none higher category than 5!) is due in Cairns and Townsville about 10pm this evening, eastern standard time. I am in northern NSW and so are my family but do have friends in Cairns so I am praying hard..mass evacuations again! (Latest update: On this evening's news on ABC said it is as big as Hurricane Katrina and Qld has never seen one this big in recorded history - sure pray these stat.s are wrong!)
Here is my mess this morning! I am trying out a new project and still not convinced I have mastered it. I was reading up on challenges (which I always end up doing too late) but this one said to use transparencies. Now I was totally oblivious to the method of stamping on acetate and colouring; so master Google and You-tube came to my rescue. I had nothing like the stamps they “demo-ed” the method of course and so thought I would give to go with brayering. But not sure it has worked - you will have to wait and see with this as waiting for it to dry at present that is one thing it does not dry quickly!! You stamp on one side with Staz-on or similar ink pad and then colour on the other side. I think the colours will not be strong enough and may try an underlay with the colours I want.
I am also showing the way I store my unmounted stamps as last week I promised Karen @ Stamprr I would post a pickie as she asked me about it.
Last week Karen was mounting her unmounted stamps and storing them on the back of laminated sheets. I told her of the tabbed Ez mount divider sheets and folder I had mine in. it is actually an ordinary high school type ring binder we use over here. But is it zippered one (i.e. has a zipper all around it to close it up so nothing falls out) and has extra pouches in the front and back where I stick the clear ones on sheets..
If you have laminated sheets so there is nothing to stop you just punching holes through the A4 sheets and then putting them in ring binders too. I have categories (eg Christmas, words, flowers, scrolls etc) and st
ore it that way. This link here has the tabbed storage sheets and these are the ones I have.
To join in the fun of WOYWW, make sure you drop by Julia's Stamping Ground!
Happy WOYWW, everyone!

PS re. the acetate and drying times, I will update on next post (God willing!) as it has been a steep learning curve..but looking better than I hoped at one stage there!! I was going to chuck it but I am stubborn as they come and tried another way! in on my hot-water hater drying after gluing now..any tips if you have done this are appreciated!! :)

PPS Thurs. 3rd Feb.
Oh and to see the card finished look in post above as it is completed and quite happy with it!!

  1. Hey Shaz,
Great storage idea for your stamps. I'm going to have to consider my own options now that my collection is fast growing. Been on a bit of an eBay splurge this morning too.

The cyclone is very concerning. I have relatives in Townsville and hubby has family in Mackay so its very stressful. Hopefully it doesn't end up as bad as predicted. We've had enough shocking weather this year already!

  2. Your storage idea for unmounted stamps is very similar to mine - and my binder also has a zipper all around it!
Hope everybody in Australia will be okay - I've heard about the cyclone on the German news that I check every day from here (CA).

  8. I can't believe all the problems Qld is having. It's a bit like New York. They just get the snow cleared a bit and a new storm comes along. At least not nearly as many lost their lives in New York, so that isn't much of a comparison.

I like the stamp storage. I have a friend who stores hers like that. Of course she has a gazillion stamps and I have about 20. (I'm #8)

  9. Great storage solutions. Hope your friends in Cairns are ok - Oz certainly seems in the thick of it at the moment.

  12. Hi Shaz! Thanks for posting your storage! I meant to tell you, the EZ Mount sheets are actually what I have but I didn't remember what they were called so I was just calling them laminated sheets. And I have them in regular old binders too but mine aren't zippered and maybe they should be before I lose a stamp!
Good luck with your acetate project, I'm afraid I have no advice but I will check back to see what happens with yours!

  15. Hi there,

Thanks for the kind words and visit. You are looking busy. Good that you are trying out new things - there is a lot to learn. Just keep having a go - that is how I learnt Do take a look at the Ranger Blog videos too. You can stamp on linen with Archival ink very easily - just heat set it quickly afterwards. I have also used Stazon to stamp on linen too. Again - heat set to stop it smudging. Have fun and adre to experiment!

    Bye Sarah xx

  23. I have family in Brisbane, Queensland and do hope that they will be safe. The flooding has been horrendous.
I have not come across stamping on acetate before either and as I'm always looking to broaden my knowledge I will be off to good old google for a snoop.
Your binder idea is good. i love that you have put the page opposite showing what the stamp is like. It is quite hard sometimes to discern what the image is just by picking up. My stash is only small at present(but growing by the minute) so is stored in an airtight plastic box.
Glad you liked Monkeys mischief! Thanks so much for stopping by.
    Hugs Mrs A.

  26. Great stamp storage, I'm impressed that. I can't get over the crazy weather over in Queensland at the moment, it's dreadful.

Good for you trying new techniques, it's really rewarding when you learn new stuff like that. I'm going to try sewing felt soon (and I can't sew!)

  27. Hello Shaz, I hope your family and friends are all okay and that the cyclone fizzles out before it does too much damage. Love the card you are working on - it looks lovely from here. Elizabeth x #96

  28. Never tried acetate so I have nothing to offer on that score! Looks good anyway, hope it works out. We were a bit pre-occupied here with "snowmageddon" as the crazy news channels were calling it so I wasn't aware of the cyclone until today. When will it end? This season has been crazy weather wise, hope everyone managed to ride the storm out. I caught re-runs on Rain Shadow last week, amazing the weather variations in Australia, never realized it was so diverse!

  29. Sounds like coloring on acetate would be difficult, as it would not stay? Good luck with all that. Prayers are with those in Austraila. Hope your friends are okay. Thanks for stopping by my desk. #15

  31. Great storage idea! Can't wait to see the finished idea. I have trouble remembering due dates for challenges etc. so you are not alone in that boat! It has been a horrible week with weather here with all the snow and ice. I would love for spring to come and I know when it does I will be wondering where the year has gone!. Thanks for sharing. 32. Thanks for sharing your storage with us. I have not tried brayering on acetate, but I have printed on it and then coloured in with Sakura pens, which works well. I have also used peel offs, flowers and that sort of thing, and coloured those in from the back. A third method is to scan a stamp onto your computer, flip it digitally, and print it on the acetate, and either colour it or add silver or gold leaf to the back. The scanning of the stamp should not be done if you are doing it for sale, and it could be a good idea to ask the designer if they are ok with you adapting their design in this way (I asked Barbara Gray and she was fine with it as it was not for sale)

We are all thinking about the poor folks who are suffering again in Queensland, and hoping their troubles will soon be over. Having looked at the cyclone on Google Earth, it is terrifying.

  35. WOW!!!!! I just found your blog thru WOYWW. Your calligraphy is profoundly amazing!! I've done calligraphy since the 80's. Taught classes and all but, not to the degree of illumination that you have achieved. Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing. I'm following your blog now.
